THE HISTORY OF THE SWISS GUARD

THE HISTORY OF THE SWISS GUARD

MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS

Joining our association means becoming part of a group of enthusiasts united by a shared commitment: to faithfully and rigorously bring back to life the history of the Swiss Guards regiment of the King’s Military Household, from its creation to its dissolution, with particular attention given to the second half of the 18th century.

Recruitment conditions

I. General Conditions

The association is open to anyone motivated by history and the reenactment of an 18th-century military unit, willing to engage in a collective activity and able to respect rules of organization, safety, and discipline.

Particular attention is given to the seriousness of the approach and the candidate’s motivation.

II. Requirements

To ensure unity and credibility, certain criteria are required to portray a Swiss Guard:

+ be male ;
+ be at least 18 years old (minors accepted under conditions) ;
+ be at least 5'8" tall (in line with historical recruitment standards) ;
+ have a physique compatible with reenactment requirements.

Beyond these criteria, the association values essential human qualities: respect, discipline, commitment, and a desire to share knowledge.

Application, Probation and Admission

Entry into the regiment takes place in several stages:

+ initial contact and submission of an application (presentation and motivation) via the form;
+ review by the Board;
+ admission as a probationary member for one year.

I. Initial Contact

Entry into the regiment begins with an initial contact through the dedicated form.

The applicant is invited to provide their personal information (name, contact details, etc.) and to write a short introductory text outlining their background and the reasons why they wish to join the regiment.

This first step allows the association to assess the candidate’s motivation and the consistency of their application with the spirit of the group.

Upon receipt, the application is carefully reviewed by the Board of Directors. An interview may then be proposed — in person, by telephone or via video conference — in order to present the association, its requirements and its way of operating in greater detail, and to answer any questions the candidate may have.

Following these exchanges, and in the event of a favorable outcome, the candidate receives confirmation by email of their admission as a probationary member

II. Probation Period

During this one-year period, the probationary member gradually integrates into the group. This includes:

+ discovering activities;
+ acquiring uniform and equipment;
+ developing a historical persona;
+ participating in at least one public presentation.

No membership fee is required during this period.

The uniform and equipment are acquired progressively, and the probation period may be extended if necessary. Compliance with dress regulations is an essential condition for integration. Personalized guidance is provided to each recruit in order to support this process.

Throughout this period, the probationary member may not wear the white or tricolour cockade, which is only awarded upon investiture.

III. Admission

At the end of this period, the probationary member may be admitted as a full member, subject to approval by the Board of Directors.

The member is then required to pay the annual membership fee of €40.

An investiture ceremony is held within the year following admission. On this occasion, the new member receives their cockade from an officer of their company and swears an oath on the regimental flag, thereby formally sealing their commitment to the regiment.

Depending on their level of involvement and seniority within the association, members may gain access to higher ranks and/or be awarded distinctions and decorations corresponding to those in use during the historical period represented.

Voluntary Commitment

Joining the regiment entails a genuine personal commitment, both in terms of time and resources.

This includes, in particular, regular involvement (time, travel, preparation), financial participation related to uniform and activities, and sustained engagement in a demanding collective project.

If you share this vision of historical reenactment and wish to join a serious and passionate association, we would be pleased to welcome you among us.
